Reuben DeBoer, a graduate of Smithville Christian High School and member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Dunnville, Ont., is a 2024 recipient of the Schulich Leader Scholarship, a nationally awarded prize.

Given to 100 Canadian students each year in the science, technology, engineering, and math fields, the scholarships are awarded in connection with partner universities and are valued at $100,000 or $120,000 depending on the degree sought. DeBoer received a $120,000 engineering scholarship. Schulich calls the program Canada’s largest, most prestigious STEM scholarship.

Criteria for Schulich leaders include academic excellence, leadership, and entrepreneurial spirit. The recipients must have a focus on careers in technology, engineering, entrepreneurship, business, or applied scientific research. Over 1,400 students across Canada were nominated for the award.

DeBoer, who learned about his achievement on a phone call with the Schulich committee April 30, said, “It almost felt like a dream.”

“It's a great honor to receive this scholarship,” he added. “I've worked hard over high school on different projects, and it feels amazing to receive it. It really reduces the financial burden during university and frees me up to focus on school and other possible projects.”

He intends to begin studies at Western University in London, Ont., in the fall, specializing in mechanical engineering after a year in the general engineering program.
