Synod 2026 delegates voted down a proposal to change synod’s meeting schedule. The Council of Delegates had proposed that synods convene on a Saturday, meeting until the following Saturday. Synods currently meet from Friday to the following Thursday.
Lucas tenBrink, Classis Holland, favored the change, saying it would make it easier for elder and deacon delegates to attend. “The proposed change allows us to take five vacation days instead of six,” he said.
Other delegates spoke in favor of maintaining the current schedule. Richard Grift, Classis Toronto, noted that the first two days of synod, currently Friday and Saturday being spent in advisory committee meetings discussing the agenda, can be the most intense days of synod. He said the Sunday day of Sabbath rest is so important before the full synod discussion days.
