Western Christian High School in Hull, Iowa, won its 11th boys state basketball title March 8, winning against the Hudson (Iowa) Pirates 78-51 in the Class 2A state championship match.
Juniors Kaden Van Regenmorter and Karsten Moret were recognized for exceptional performance in the tournament by being named to the all-tournament team, with Van Regenmorter designated captain.
Head coach Derek Keizer, who attends Faith Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, Iowa, found this year’s team to be special overall. “From top to bottom, I’m not sure I’ve ever been a part of a group that’s been this selfless. They truly played for each other and simply wanted to win. The pressure to compete was overridden by the joy to compete with one another,” Keizer said.
Western’s head administrator Brian Verwolf, who attends Hope CRC in Hull, said, “Ultimately, our goal is to realize a transformative experience for student-athletes, coaches, and the wider community.” He said in moments like winning a championship, “I am reminded of how important it is for each student to be poured into and (to) experience belonging. When we get this right, transformation ensues. If championships are the result, praise God! We continue to pray that all Wolfpack activities reflect our faith in God. This will be evidenced by how we serve, perform, and compete with others.”
The Wolfpack last won this title in 2021.
