Lee Carter, new director of Thrive, told Synod 2026 delegates that in his short time at the congregational support ministry, he has discovered that the staff understand that they serve, not steer congregations, acting not ‘for’ but walking ‘with’ churches. Thrive supports Christian Reformed congregations in areas of abuse prevention, chaplaincy, worship, church renewal, and many more.
“Thrive is a ministry of companionship. We must not do work entrusted to the church. We encourage, support, listen to, and strengthen churches,” Carter said. “(Our) mandate is (to be) a companion and guide, to gather and share wisdom, equip and consult with churches and classes in challenging contexts.”
Synod ratified Carter’s appointment, made in May by the Council of Delegates. Carter steps in after the retirement of Lesli van Milligen, whose last day as director was May 29.
