Young Ellie can’t wait to be in the Christmas play. She loves Jesus so much and is excited to celebrate his birthday. But she has a big problem. She wants to participate in the play wearing her elephant costume, but her bossy older sister, Piper, who is directing the play, won’t allow her to because there are no elephants in Bethlehem.

Undaunted, Ellie tells the baby Jesus doll that she is an elephant who never forgets. Ellie knows that even though the baby Jesus doll doesn’t respond to her whispers, Jesus understands her, and he loves all of his creation, including her and elephants.

When the play begins, Ellie ignores Piper’s admonitions and tries to sneak on the stage—first with the shepherds, then with the angels, and finally with the Magi. But each time Piper catches her and turns her away.

When Piper realizes that the baby Jesus doll is missing, Ellie remembers where it was waylaid and saves the Christmas play, receiving a surprising response.

Author Maria Antonia’s humorous narrative poignantly portrays a young child’s imagination, love for Jesus, and desire to contribute in her own way. Illustrator Laura Zarrin’s winsome, playful pictures capture Ellie’s determination and adoration and Piper’s realization that “Christmas is all about Jesus.”

The Christmas Elephant, a playful and meaningful book, would make a lovely Christmas gift for young children and their parents to enjoy.
