For more than 15 years, author Joshua Becker has been promoting “God-motivated minimalism” in his books, websites, blog, and public speaking. Uncluttered Faith is a synopsis of what he learned through his wife’s and his choices to embrace minimalism and the experiences of countless others who, through decluttering their possessions and curbing their purchases, grew in their love for God, people, and creation.
Becker defines minimalism as “the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of everything that distracts us from it.” He adds that minimalism will look different in the lives of various individuals, yet invariably will be beneficial for all.
Becker explains that he chose the title of his book, Uncluttered Faith, “not because it is about believing less, as in abandoning unwanted doctrines or picking or choosing one’s version of God.” Rather, Becker emphasizes, it is about “uncluttering the physical possessions in our lives so that our faith can be uncluttered and unfettered, and we can reach our full potential through Christ.”
Uncluttered Faith is peppered with anecdotes and replete with explorations of Scripture’s teachings about wealth, greed, cheerful giving, gratitude, and more. Becker describes the benefits of uncluttered faith, including learning about one’s self, living closer to Jesus, gaining victory over greed, making spiritual growth a priority, becoming more generous, finding contentment, and more. The book, which concludes with a seven-step guide to becoming a minimalist, is suitable for mature Christians, anyone who is curious about Jesus, or individuals who are just beginning the journey of living for Jesus. Though the book doesn’t include discussion questions, it is suitable for small group and individual study.
