This new book, by Anne Graham Lotz and her daughter Rachel-Ruth Lotz Wright, reminds readers through the story of Joseph that God has much to teach people through their experiences of suffering and hardship.
God does not want people to be “pulled toward” the things of this earth because the things of this earth are only temporary. He reminds believers not to store up their treasures here on earth when their true inheritance is with him in heaven. He is the one who shepherded Joseph through his entire life and brought him from the pit to the palace, who helped Joseph respond to his adverse circumstances with humility, grace, and love when Joseph could have responded with anger or vengeance. Joseph’s years of suffering shaped him into a man of “stalwart faith,” rather than making him a man of bitterness, hatred, and disappointment. The story of Joseph reminds readers that when we allow our lives to be led by the divine hand of God, God is able to use our lives for our ultimate good and his greatest glory.
This book is so engaging because Lotz Wright is an organized and masterful Bible teacher. She is a diligent student of the Bible, and her diligence comes to life in her writing. She has a gift for making an old beloved Bible story brim with renewed hope, encouragement, and emotion. Readers will experience joy in sharing Joseph’s story anew because they will catch glimpses of themselves in the pages of each chapter. Joseph’s story reveals to readers a very human and imperfect family. While getting to know Joseph, we are introduced to father Jacob and to Joseph’s oft-troubled half brothers. We are invited to consider what kind of people we are and what kind of legacy we want to leave for others.
Each chapter ends with a few short paragraphs highlighting a gospel connection and concludes with a brief gracious prayer. This book is both multi-faceted and personal; it is a meaningful addition to an adult’s devotional reading list. Small group study materials sold separately.
